Working Together to Keep Those Vulnerable Well– Anne’s Story

COVID-19 has without a doubt, affected each of us in a variety of ways. For seniors and those immune compromised, going out in public and having to isolate can pose a major risk to both their physical health and emotional wellbeing. Sadly, for many of these people, even post-pandemic, will still have challenges getting around to accomplish many basic daily tasks and activities that many of us take for granted.

Anne (not her real name) is a senior in our community who lost her husband 3 years ago. She has no family in the area and currently lives independently. Her challenges with mobility, in conjunction with feelings of anxiety due to the current pandemic have made tasks such as shopping for groceries and essential items difficult.

Just, prior to the loss of her husband. Anne contacted the Peachland Wellness Centre for support. At that time the PWC assisted her with light housekeeping through the Better At Home program. Since isolating during the pandemic, she has been supported by us through check-in phone calls and weekly pick up and delivery of groceries and essential items.

The PWC offers a transportation service, where volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to both pickup and deliver groceries and essential items to Peachland residents who are not able to go grocery shopping. A suggested donation from participants is asked to cover the cost of fuel. In the event that funds are unavailable and a personal donation is not possible, donations aid in the continuous need for transportation. They help to reimburse volunteer drivers for their fuel expense.

“I just wanted to thank you (PWC) and the volunteer driver who helped me yesterday, his/her generosity and care made my day”.

During this time of giving, PWC would like to thank all of the volunteer drivers who have reached out to those members in our community that need our help. Drivers themselves also receive a gift each and every time they participate. Jay (not his/her real name), is one of the volunteer drivers who has delivered groceries and essential items to Anne every other week.

Become one of the 12 Donors of Christmas! Your donation to support PWC impacts our community by allowing us to help others. Your generosity helps us reach our vision to ensure that people in our community are supported to embrace a happy, healthy and independent life.
