Healthy is a different outfit for everybody! Get dressed to be active! It’s National Health and Fitness Day this Saturday June 5th!


Physical activity can be a powerful tool for Canadians as we cope with COVID fatigue. Getting active is important for managing depression, anxiety, and stress, and keeping ourselves, and our community healthy.


Adults (18+ years) should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate-to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more. It is also beneficial to add muscle and bone strengthening activities using major muscle groups, at least 2 days per week. More physical activity provides greater health benefits. Older adults (65 years and older) with poor mobility should additionally perform physical activities to enhance balance and prevent falls.


Moderate-intensity physical activities will cause adults to sweat a little and to breathe harder. On a scale of zero to 10 (with 10 being an absolute maximum effort and zero being completely at rest), moderate activities are about five or six. While doing moderate-intensity activity adults should still be able to talk but may struggle to sing along to their favourite song.


Meeting activity guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, colon and breast cancer, and type 2 diabetes. For older adults it could mean they are less likely to develop dementia, disability, and loss of function. Studies indicate that regular aerobic exercise can result in improvements in memory, attention, and processing speed.


Here at the Peachland Wellness Centre (PWC) we are thankful to be able to support health and fitness with the restart of the Tai Chi for Wellness happening in Heritage Park on Thursdays from 9:15 am to 10:15 am. This resonates with the national health and fitness movement as does the restart of the Adult Day Service. This is currently held indoors in the rented space at the 50plus Centre; however, the group will be able to venture outside for short walks in the beautiful summer sunshine Peachland is enjoying.


Other movement for us to enjoy and take part in coming up is the Art and Garden Show. A great opportunity to stroll through the beautiful gardens in Peachland. Don’t forget to buy your tickets before it is too late. The gardens in the backyard are ready for the Garden tour. The laughter and socialization that is starting to happen is heartwarming. Everyone is very conscious of the continued need for masks and social distancing but being able to chat across the garden beds offers great mental well-being.


Further supporting Health and Fitness is the mental fitness of so many who have been isolated and are now able to reconnect via the Monday Coffee for Ladies and the Men’s & Ladies cards.

We all share a collective responsibility to our community to practice physical distancing in order to help keep our loved ones safe. But that shared responsibility also means safely getting active each and every day in order for everyone to maintain healthy lifestyles.
