Peachland Wellness Bereavement Program – Providing a safe, non-judgmental space to grieve.

During the best of times, it is exceedingly difficult to deal with the emotions of the loss of a loved one, a close friend or even your family pet. This is a time of year where there is usually a lot of hustle and bustle, shopping, parties and socializing with family and friends. We are all supposed to be in a good mood, feeling festive and enjoying the holiday season. Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone. The holidays can bring a swell of grief and immense sorrow for those who have experienced a loss, and for those who are alone.

The Peachland Wellness Center offers a Bereavement Support Group year-round. This year during the pandemic restrictions, the group held socially distanced sessions outside, then moved inside at the 50+ Activity Centre and 4th Street Place. If a session could not be held the Facilitators, Dorothy Cobb , Valerie Wood and Avril Briggs would phone the participants individually. They truly showed their resilience and compassion for the participants.

Dorothy Cobb shares her experience as a Facilitator:

“The Bereavement Group is as old as the Wellness Centre. It meets weekly all year round. Sometimes we are a small group, other times we are larger. Members grow together in an experience of pain and sadness. As time passes, I have watched as senior members have reached out to new members sharing experience and guidance, empathy and understanding and, in normal circumstances, a hug for support. Each member defines his\her length of time with the group. As they feel able, they graduate moving on to a new life strong enough to establish relationships and networks that reflect a significant change in how they live their lives”.

The PWC would like to thank all the Bereavement Facilitators for providing safe, non-judgmental support and understanding for those who are experiencing grief. This is an incredibly valuable program that enables participants to receive support, during the many phases of grief.

Your donation to support PWC impacts our community by allowing us to help others. Your generosity helps us reach our vision to ensure that people in our community are supported to embrace a happy, healthy, and independent life.

Go to the PWC donation page at CanadaHelps.org, select the Donate Monthly option and then continue with your much appreciated on-going donation. You can also arrange for E-transfer to christina.pwc@outlook.com or call the Peachland Wellness Centre at (250) 767-0141 for assistance.
