The COVID-19 pandemic has created a sense of uncertainty and stress for many. But it has also enhanced community wellness as people in Peachland reach out in acts of kindness to support their neighbour, as well as local restaurants and businesses. Almost everyone has heard a story about someone who has picked up water or cooked a meal for their neighbour, set up (at a distance) a lending library of books and games, or offered to share supplies.
Other examples of community kindness that PWC staff have seen here in Peachland include:
People making masks for health care and essential workers
Window signs of encouragement, love and hope
Sidewalk art or bright painted rocks on the beachfront with happy images
Front door cupcake & candle drop-off to friends for a virtual “Zoom Birthday Party”
Response to neighbourhood Facebook requests for basic needs and supplies
Waving to fellow dog-walkers or joggers, while keeping your distance
When we think of kindness, we think of helping others; but in fact, there are mutual benefits for both the donor and recipient. Kindness reduces stress, boosts our immune system, and helps reduce negative emotions such as anger, anxiety and depression. It can also heighten the sense of our own good fortune.
During the month of May, and part of our PWC Connects: Tablet Drive, we are asking you to donate your new or used tablets so that someone without access to this technology can remain connected to our Programs and Services. If you do not have any tablets, PWC is also accepting monetary donations to support this service. Go to the PWC donation page at CanadaHelps.org or Peachland Chamber, arrange for E-Transfer to email@example.com, or call the PWC and make arrangements to drop off your cheque or cash with one of our staff members. PWC has a safe drop-off site. Simply call the Peachland Wellness Centre at (250) 767-0141 before stopping by.
Connecting to each other is more important than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. One small act of kindness can release an enormous chain of positive events. Kindness is contagious and something we should all pass on and spread to others.
Thank you for supporting us so that we can support people in Peachland.
