As we watch 2020 wind down, enjoying the holiday season as best we can, the Peachland Wellness Centre is already looking ahead to the next season. That would be the Income Tax season.
For several years now, the Peachland Wellness Centre has been hosting the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). This program assists those with lower incomes to complete their taxes. It is a Canada Revenue Agency sponsored program that allows eligible individuals, who are not able to complete their income tax and benefit returns by themselves, to have their taxes done for free by volunteers.
Starting March 2021, even if Covid-19 restrictions remain in place, the PWC plans to provide this service. Participants will register to make an appointment (to drop off their information at PWC), and once the volunteer completes your tax return, you will be notified to pick up your documents.
Completing an income tax return can be daunting for some. One such person is Francis (not her real name), who lost her husband over a year ago. He had always looked after their finances, and after his passing she became responsible for this unfamiliar task.
She saw the PWC Income Tax poster around town, popped into our little house, and asked for help. A PWC Service Coordinator reviewed her situation and then helped her register for the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. A volunteer then helped Francis complete her personal tax return. While the CVITP normally completes simple personal taxes only, and does not do taxes for deceased family members, this particular volunteer went the extra mile and helped complete her husband’s taxes as well.
“The PWC saved me. I don’t know what I would have done without this help”.
During this time of giving, PWC would like to thank all of the volunteers that offer their services during tax season to help those such as Francis.
Francis went on from there to join other programs that PWC offered such as Bereavement, to talk about her feelings of isolation and being alone since her husband’s passing, Monday Morning Coffee where she socialized and the Sunshine Singers where she sang and stimulated the endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, that made her feel happier and less depressed.
The PWC was so heartened that we were able to help Francis and continue to help so many others in this way.
